One thing we tell every family before they choose: the more faces in the frame, the harder a fully painted treatment works. Paint simplifies. At six or seven people, the detail it smooths away is what makes each person recognizable, so larger groups land better as prints.
Any portrait photographer can hand you files. Deciding whether a piece belongs in paint or print takes an artist’s eye, and that call is easier standing in front of both.
A family portrait session moves through five stages, and only one of them involves a camera.
Kids set the pace. We book toddlers and newborn sittings early in the day, before naps. Every photographer who works with small children learns the same thing: the real smiles arrive once kids stop performing, which is why the last frames of family sessions are the ones parents choose. Same at our children’s photography sessions, and same for grandparents. Nobody laughs on cue.
Families come back for a milestone piece, high school senior pictures, or a maternity sitting. Keeping the medium consistent stops a wall from turning into mismatched frames.
Measure the wall before you pick a size. The working rule for art hung over furniture is that the piece should span roughly two-thirds the width of the sofa, console, or bed beneath it, with the center of the image 57 to 60 inches off the floor. That is average standing eye level.
Undersizing is the mistake we watch people make most. A canvas that looked enormous on a studio easel can vanish on an eight foot wall, and the fix afterward is a reprint, not a resize. Bring measurements and a phone photo of the room so we can talk scale against your furniture.
Light matters too. Direct afternoon sun fades pigment and paper alike, so skip the west-facing wall that stares at an uncovered window. Minnesota rooms swing hard between January gloom and July glare.
