Family portraits at Inna Portraits are finished artwork, not a folder of digital files. You sit for a session in our downtown studio, and that sitting becomes a fine art print, an oil or acrylic canvas, or a mixed media painting for your wall.
Camera work is only the first half. With a master’s degree in art, Inna paints and finishes the work herself, so a portrait of your mother, father, son, or daughter is treated as art, not output.
Two ways in: book a fine art photography session, or bring a still image you already love.
Most family photography in Minneapolis ends as an online gallery nobody opens twice. Finished examples of the other approach hang at the studio, 308 E Hennepin Ave, Suite C300, Minneapolis MN 55414. Still deciding who to hire? Our guide to choosing a Minneapolis family photographer covers that.
The medium decides how a portrait reads from across a room. A camera captures a moment, paint interprets one. A photograph holds fine detail, a painted canvas trades detail for brushwork and mood.
| Medium | How it reads on the wall | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Fine art print | Holds skin, eye, and fabric detail at large sizes | Groups of five or more, candid expressions |
| Oil on canvas | Warm and soft, reads as a painting from three feet away | One or two subjects, formal poses |
| Acrylic on canvas | Brighter color, crisper edges than oil | Children, rooms with bold color |
| Mixed media | A photograph worked over by hand with paint | Heirloom pieces meant to feel timeless |
The more faces in the frame, the harder a fully painted treatment works. Paint simplifies. At six or seven people, the detail it smooths away is what makes each person recognizable, so larger groups land better as prints.
Any portrait photographer can hand you files. Choosing paint or print takes an artist’s eye, and the call is easier standing in front of both.
A family portrait session moves through five stages, and only one of them involves a camera.
Kids set the pace. We book toddler and newborn photography sittings early, before naps. Every photographer who works with small children learns that real, joyful smiles arrive once kids stop performing, so parents usually choose the last frames of family sessions. Same at our children’s photography sessions, and same for grandparents. Nobody laughs on cue.
Families come back for a milestone piece, high school senior pictures, or a maternity or newborn sitting. A consistent medium lets those pieces document the years instead of turning a wall into mismatched frames.
Measure the wall before you pick a size. The working rule for art over furniture: the piece should span roughly two-thirds the width of the sofa, console, or bed beneath it, with the center of the image 57 to 60 inches off the floor. That is average standing eye level.
Undersizing is the mistake we watch people make most. A canvas that looked enormous on a studio easel can vanish on an eight foot wall, and the fix afterward is a reprint, not a resize. Bring a phone photo of the room so we can judge scale against your furniture.
Light matters too. Afternoon sun fades pigment and paper, so in a light-filled room keep the piece off a west-facing wall across from an uncovered window. Minnesota rooms swing hard between January gloom and July glare.
Booking starts with a complimentary, no-commitment guidance session, not a deposit. We work with families from across the Twin Cities metro, and that conversation turns a vague idea into a specific piece and size.
Bring wall measurements, a phone photo of the room, and any older family photos the new piece will hang beside. The room photo often changes the wardrobe plan, since clothing that fights the decor pulls eyes off faces. Inna’s award winning work also covers children’s photography, senior pictures, and business headshots, and each starts the same way.
The family portraits Minneapolis parents still love twenty years later are the ones that got planned, not the ones squeezed in before a holiday card deadline. Start with the free guidance session, then choose print or paint after seeing both at full size. Call and TALK with Inna or have Inna CALL YOU.
